“Universal accessibility in residential buildings continues to be a pending issue and not only in the case of Spain, where the index stands at 0.6%, but also in Germany with 1.5%, and Sweden with a 2.5%. This study, prepared by the Mutual Owners Foundation in collaboration with the UNESCO Chair of Housing at the Rovira i Virgili University of Tarragona, indicates that we are facing a serious situation, especially in the cases of homes that have neighbors with reduced mobility or disability.
The research, carried out among more than 1,500 homes, reveals that important deficiencies have been revealed that prevent achieving a more egalitarian and fair society in terms of physical access to housing.
The following report has analyzed three types of housing policies: southern Europe (Spain), where home ownership and the organization of buildings in horizontal ownership predominate; Central Europe (Germany) with a similarity in the structure of housing in flats, where rental takes precedence over ownership; and the model of Northern European countries, where cooperatives prevail as a form of building ownership.”
